Open Player Here – Skin to Skin with Jennifer and My Lord What A Mornin’.
Several years ago, I had the great good fortune to sing with Mr. Belafonte on some music projects. I have never forgotten those days, they form a quiet pride within me. Harry Belafonte was a hero from my childhood. I taught myself to sing his song “My Lord What a Mornin'” and sang it in the shower, in full voice, in the early morning before school. This was a joke among our neighbors, because the windows were wide open and I wasn’t shy.
To finally record with Harry was one of the sweetest highs of my career. Watching him sing “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day” live with The London Symphony Orchestra — his voice rising up from that huge echo chamber in his heart, I wept.
I don’t think Harry ever knew exactly what that moment meant to me. You see, Harry is the sound of my America. He has a very bright light inside him, which he has freely given away to all of us for so many years.
I carry Harry’s voice close to my vest, like a singer’s blessing from childhood.
Thank you, as Leonard Cohen said, for “that flake of your light”.
Harry was truly beloved by so many and I am deeply honored to be among them.
Across the years,
